Youth and Family Ministry at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church includes children and youth of all age groups. Children and youth are encouraged to participate in all youth activities regardless of parental membership or participation. As for our community, we are the family of God recognizing that family is not only blood related, but those people in our community with whom we are in relationship. All children, youth, parents, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, neighborhood friends, mentors, choir members, elderly parishioners, kitchen helpers, single adults, core team members, day care workers, and all others who are a part of the St. Matthew’s Community are welcome to participate in any youth activity by mentoring, donating treats to an event, driving youth to events, listening, hanging out with youth, and praying for and with them. Youth and Family ministry is about the whole church community. You are welcome to participate in any way you can!

Our partnership with Vibe Urban Youth Ministries
Vibe Urban Youth Ministries is a collaborative of eleven St. Paul urban congregations, including St. Matthew’s, who have joined because we believe we can do so much more than we can do separately. Together, we Value, Invest, Build, and Equip urban youth and their families to be a part of the new urban church: a church rooted in relationships, growing in gospel-faith, and wealthy with diversity of every kind.

VIBE Mission Statement: We are called to transform urban youth, strengthen communities, and unite congregations.

Vibe offers many opportunities for youth grades 4 through 12, as well as their families. Specifically for youth, we offer monthly:
large group events for all ages
Confirmation & hip-hop worship
Sunday morning breakfast club
Small group relationship building

Vibe also offers camping and retreat opportunities, service events, and leadership training for all age groups including adults as mentors. Families and church lay leaders are encouraged to take part in every aspect of their child’s faith journey!

Vibe Confirmation
One of the most vibrant of the Vibe programs, is a two year confirmation program for 7th and 8th grade students but we welcome youth in older grades who have not completed confirmation and would like to. The focus of the 2002-03 curriculum is “Who is Jesus?” Youth from all Vibe churches meet once a month at the scheduled location for a large group presentation on the topic for the month, break up into small family groups for additional conversation, and then eat dinner together. Check below for confirmation schedule and locations.

Every month, Confirmation is followed by JUMP Worship (Joint Urban Ministries in Praise). JUMP Worship is a collaboration with Joint Confirmation Ministries in Minneapolis, a program similar to Vibe confirmation, and is open to all youth from around the Twin Cities. Dave Scherer, aka “AGAPE,” leads the group in hip-hop liturgy and worship with an urban flavor! All youth are welcome to participate using their talents of song, reading, drama, or anything else they want to throw into the mix.
